The Disorientation

I got a new chair

And it's been doing wonders for my back.

My old chair broke about a month back or so. The back support area, whatever it's called, just completely broke off. Like suddenly, too. I'm someone who likes to lean back when I'm sitting, so imagine my surprise when I nearly fell backwards and banged my damn toes on my desk.

I figured I'd ride it out as I looked for a new chair. My old one wasn't anything fancy. It didn't even have arm-rests, but it did its job.

I also figured having no back support would force me to correct my posture as I usually slouch. It did. For a bit. However, it made my back hurt real bad. Like a sharp pain up my right side up to my shoulder blades. When that happened, I had to lay down for a few minutes. It was immobilizing pain. I guess having a chair with back support plus good posture is the way to go (which seems obvious now that I'm writing this). I've seen people sit at chairs without it, but I can't do that.

I'm often at my desk, too, so that pain sucked.

So the chair I ordered arrived a few days ago and it's been real nice. It's got this cushion-y material for the back support with makes it very comfortable. It's also contoured so it gives me better posture by default (as opposed with my previous chair, which was flat). It's got arm rests, too. Adjustable heights and that octopus-like rolling base. I like to swivel around. Makes moving around actually practical.

Just a regular office chair, really. It's on the cheap side, but it's miles better than my previous one. I can only imagine what a more well-made (read: expensive) one can feel.

I can finally work at my desk without pain shooting up my back.

And this made me think about items that may be worth a few extra clams. Stuff like a nice pair of socks, well-fitted shoes, or a good winter jacket. Things that are used everyday and often help the body feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

I think a good quality chair should go on that list.

Anyway, here's to better posture and no back pain.
