The Disorientation

Starting another playthrough of Borderlands 3 (again)

I was itching to play some Borderlands 3 again so I fired it up and immediately got hit with this horrible statistic: a little over 9 days of play-time.

Hell no. I really did not need to know that. A whole 9 days I've played this game! That's 216 hours. Granted, that's spread out over a few years, but still. That's messed up.

I've spent 216 hours playing just one game. And that's not including others like Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and a bunch of GTAs. I've probably got thousands of hours across these games. Heck, that's not even including Borderlands 2, either. I'm sure I've got a solid 300 hours on that game, too.

What's particularly funny about all of this is that I actually haven't fully finished the game. The Borderlands series is known for additional, post-launch content. Borderlands 3 was no exception, which saw it get four story DLCs and a bunch of other fairly meaty expansions. I've never played through any of the DLCs with any character.

Borderlands is a "comfort series" for me. It's a series where, despite the fact I've played literal hundreds of hours of, I can boot up and have a great time. I know all of the quests by heart now. I know all of the dialogue, all of the characters, where to go and when, and so on. I know which bosses drop which loot. I know which weapons work best with which character. As a whole, it's a comforting world.

I was thinking about this as I saw that play-time. Borderlands 3 takes probably about 30 or so hours to complete? That's the average for me, if memory serves right. That's the main quests and a some side quests here and there. Everything else in the base game probably ends up being about 50 or so hours. Plus DLC... is who knows how much.

And that's not even including time spent on farming bosses. The Borderlands series is great for this. Certain enemies (bosses) drop certain weapons, shields, grenades, etc. As far as I know, there are roughly 250 unique legendary weapons (not including shields, grenades, mods, etc.). Many of them have different variants (say fire versus corrosive) and stats (say better fire rate versus damage). So there's probably millions of different combinations. And of course each item has a specific chance of dropping. Say a legendary pistol only drops once every 25 attempts. Shit can be a pain to farm, but that's part of the fun.

Oh, and those are just legendaries. There's also the Epic and Rare class of rarity. It wouldn't surprise me if there's something like over 500 unique items in the game. That's a lot of farming.

Anyway, I plan on doing another full playthrough while sticking to one character and leveling her up to the max level (72, I believe). I'm also planning to finally play and complete the story DLCs plus all the other goodies.

So that 216 hours will easily hit 300 hours. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being closer to 350 hours.

That's kind of sad to think about. Wasting 300+ hours of my life on a game. I suppose it's not too bad when those 300+ hours were fun as hell. Better to waste time and be happy than be miserable.

Anyway, off get some sweet loot.
