The Disorientation

Trying to become ambidextrous for no real reason

I'm right handed. Always have been. However, I do some things left-handed. Mainly, I play guitar and bass left-handed.

I don't know why. It just feels more comfortable that way, I guess. I remember picking up a guitar for the first time and holding it left-handed. I didn't even realize there was a handedness to holding an instrument. It just felt natural.

I'm actually in an odd position in where I play right-handed guitars/basses left-handed. In other words, the instrument is upside down. Elizabeth Cotton is a great folk musician who played like this. MonoNeon is a great bassist who plays like this, too. The strings are upside down, so the low, bassy string is on the bottom and the high string is up top. Thus, my chord shapes are upside down, too and probably look weird to someone who plays normally. The knobs and tuners are also in weird positions, which can make it a hassle.

That said, I can pick up any right-handed guitar/bass (which are more common) and play it, which is a plus. Lefty instruments tend to be more expensive and not as common, anyway. And I'm a cheapskate.

I always wondered why I preferred playing like this. I haven't really figured out why, other than it just feels more natural.

Anyway, I tried writing with my left hand and found it looked like a three year old could have better handwriting. So I started practicing. I practiced everyday for month by writing down the first paragraph of a random Wikipedia article.

By the end of the month... my left-handed handwriting still sucked. But it was getting slightly better. The lines looked a bit more natural and didn't look like some spooky, horror font anymore.

It's a weird and fun sort of exercise. It's like learning to write all over again. The position you hold your pen/pencil in might not work for your opposite hand. The angle the paper is in might also be weird. I also have no idea what to do with my right hand when practicing. It almost feels like it belongs to someone else, which is funny.

I want to continue practicing because I think it'd be fun to get to the point where I can just switch hands when one gets tired. I write a lot, anyway, and sometimes my hand will cramp up. Would be a useful skill to have, I think, and a fun party trick.
